Angry Psychologist refers to a Russian webcomic that has been used as an meme format in Russia since 2013. The comic, created by artist Egor Motygin, depicts a psychologist getting angry at a patient and beating him. The format quickly took off in Russia, with users adding new text to change the context, with English variations becoming popular in the later years.

Origin

On September 25th, 2013, artist Egor Motygin posted the comic to his LiveJournal[1] page under the title, "Brain Tripper Issue 0: Cats" (shown below, left). In the first panel, the patient says, "Doctor, the thing is that I don't like cute cats," followed by an angry expression from the psychologist in the second. In the third panel the patient says, "Doctor?" and in the fourth, the doctor is beating the patient, blood flying from his face, shouting, "You heartless piece of shit!"

The comic was reposted to JoyReactor[2] on September 26th by user iksss, garnering over 58,000 upvotes. On that same day at 1:54 PM, pikabu[3] user AnanasBaratyni posted the first labeled version of the format, with the first speech bubble changed to, "I never flush in public toilets" (shown below, right). The post gained over 440 upvotes in 7 years.

On September 26th, 2013, bugsbunny2 posted a template for the format to JoyReactor[4] in response to Iksss post. The format grew quickly in popularity among Russian internet users, with new variants popping up across sites like JoyReactor and pikabu. At some point the image was added to Risovach,[5] a Russian site for making memes, where many Russian variations of the meme can be found (examples shown below, left and right).

North Americans started using the image in late 2015. On November 27th, 2015, PeanutBudda posted a collection of 10 variations on the image to Imgur,[6] garnering over 57,000 views and 1,800 upvotes (examples shown below, left and right). These are some of the earliest English examples of the meme.
