"Are You A Racist? Do You Hate Mexicans" refers to the opening quote in a 2022 U.S. Senate campaign video featuring Ohio Senator J. D. Vance, Donald Trump's Vice President pick for the 2024 Presidential Election. The video was posted by Vance in 2022 before he was elected a junior United States senator. Parodies and memes of the clip, including one in which Vance is made to say "Are you a faggot? Do you hate vagina?" began making the rounds in mid-2024.
Origin
On April 5th, 2022, J. D. Vance posted a video to X[1] as part of his 2022 Ohio Senate campaign run, gathering 7,000 likes in two years on a video that opens with him asking, "Are you a racist? Do you hate Mexicans?" (seen below). In the video, Vance says that the media wrongly derides Republicans as racists for wanting to "build Trump's wall" and that he "nearly lost" his own mother to the "poison coming across" the border.

In his 2016 memoir Hillbilly Elegy Vance recounts his life growing up with Appalachian family values in rural Ohio, where his mother began to abuse prescription drugs she had access to through her job working as a nurse.

Vance as his Vice President pick ahead of the 2024 Presidential Election, internet users resurfaced the aforementioned campaign video as it began to spread more widely online. For example, on July 15th, 2024, many X / Twitter users criticized Vance for blaming his mother's drug addiction on Mexican immigrants, as seen in a post from X user @Luisisdrunk[2] that gathered over 260,000 likes in a day (seen below, left).
Another quote tweet from @DanielRPK[3] on July 15th called Vance a "real life character from The Boys," gathering over 140,000 likes in a day (seen below, right).
Other X users posted a clipped version of the video, as seen in a July 15th, 2024, post by X[4] user @jarvis_best who wrote, "Me trying to find a wife," and gathered 2,000 likes in two days (seen below).

"Are You A Faggot? Do You Hate Vagina?"
The earliest known post showing J.D. Vance's campaign video edited to make him ask, "Do you hate vagina?" is a July 15th, 2024, post by X user @MidnightMitch.[6]
On July 16th, X[5] user @DubzyOnceAgain posted an edited version of the clip showing Vance saying, "Are you a faggot? Do you hate vagina?" The post gathered over 19,000 likes in a day (seen below).
