About
J.D. Vance's "You Guys Weren’t Going To Fact Check" refers to a quote uttered by American politician J.D. Vance during the CBS News 2024 Vice Presidential Debate in which the senator vented his displeasure with CBS moderators for fact-checking his statement about Haitian immigrants in Ohio, saying "The rules were you guys weren't going to fact check." The quote became a viral topic on social media in early October 2024, with some of Vance's supporters calling the fact-check "biased" and an attempt to "censor" him, while Tim Walz's supporters mocked J.D.'s interaction with the CBS moderators.
Origin
On October 1st, 2024, CBS News moderators Norah O’Donnell and Margaret Brennan fact-checked a statement[1] of Senator J.D. Vance, the Republican nominee for vice president, about the Haitian immigrant population in Springfield, Ohio, in which he said "communities all across this country you’ve got schools that are overwhelmed, you’ve got hospitals that are overwhelmed, you’ve got housing that is totally unaffordable because we’ve brought in millions of illegal immigrants to compete with Americans for scarce homes.”
After Tim Walz responded to Vance's statement, Brennan clarified that "Springfield, Ohio does have a large number of Haitian migrants who have legal status, temporary protected status,” which prompted the Republican VP candidate to vent his displeasure with CBS moderators, saying "The rules were that you guys weren’t going to fact-check.”
The moment was widely shared on social media, including a post by the X[2] user @atrupar (seen below), which amassed over 155,000 views and 3,500 likes in a day.
