About

BennyDrama On Phone, also known as Woke Before Responsibilities, refers to an exploitable image macro and reaction image taken from a White House promotional video about COVID-19 vaccine awareness that depicts TikToker and influencer BennyDrama. The video itself was used to try and encourage the use of vaccines in a comedy skit, and a still image of Benny on the phone was then used in memes, primarily to mock the administration.

Origin

On August 9th, 2021, TikToker[1] BennyDrama7 posted a video of him and White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki in Washington D.C. as part of a promotional skit for vaccine awareness. The video[2] received over 1 million likes and 6.5 million views in two months (shown below), featuring Benny and Psaki in various parts of the White House having mock conversations about how to increase vaccinations.

On August 10th, 2021, the NYPost[3] ran an article on the video, and within the article, the image later used as the template for the meme was first posted (shown below).

The earliest recorded use in a meme came on August 14th, when Donald Trump's social media director, Mike Hahn,[4] used the image in conjunction with the question "who is advising Biden on Afghanistan?," referencing that this was shortly before the planned pull-out of troops from the region. The meme received over 6,000 likes and 1,100 retweets in two months, as well as sparked the use of the image as a reaction image (shown below).

Spread

The meme continued to spread in the following days and weeks, especially in discussions or memes related to the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan in August 2021. For example, the Twitter[5] account MCOriginalist posted the picture with the caption "They said four U.S. Marines died. Should I Take a message?" The post received over 200 likes in several days before being removed by Twitter (shown below).

On September 18th, 2021, the Twitter[6] account @DarnelSugarfoo then posted the image side-by-side with that of the suspected glow boys that were at a protest in Washington D.C. The tweet received over 17,400 likes in one month (shown below).

"Don't worry, I dressed the undercover agents myself. They'll blend right in!"

We are still assessing the results of this strike, which we know disrupted an imminent ISIS-K threat to the airport.
