Bernie Sanders Receiving COVID-19 Vaccine is an image macro series featuring a photograph of a health care professional administering the COVID-19 vaccination to Senator Bernie Sanders. Online, people pair the image with photographs of humorous tattoos, creating the illusion that Sanders is receiving the tattoo.

Origin

On December 19th, 2020, the office of Senator Bernie Sanders shared an image of Sanders receiving the coronavirus vaccine (shown below).^[1]

Spread

That day, Twitter ^[2] user @SandeferSays tweeted the image with the caption, "Oh my fucking god, they're putting down Bernie Sanders." The tweet received more than 269,000 likes and 22,000 retweets in less than two weeks (shown below, left).

Shortly after, people began posting images of tattoos next Sanders receiving the vaccine. In one of the earliest examples, Twitter^[3] user @GRIFTSH0P tweeted the image next to a photo of the hex color code Elizabeth Warren tattoo. The tweet received more than 3,400 likes and 400 retweets in less than two weeks. It was also the subject of some controversy due to Sanders' Jewish heritage and the tattoo's resemblance to the tattoos given to inmates in the Nazi concentration camps.^[4]

On December 21st, Redditor Gynecoyo shared a variation of the meme in the /r/dankmemes^[5] subreddit. The meme, which features Sanders receiving a crude Charmander tattoo, received more than 46,000 points (96% upvoted) and 150 comments in less than two weeks (shown below, right).
