On September 22, 2023, the Atlantic Sports Highlights TikTok page posted a short highlight titled "Big throwback to Chubbs showing the ref his displeasure…", where a hockey player being sent off or ejected for a penalty mocks the referee by covering his eyes while tapping his hockey stick like a cane for the blind. The clip quickly gained attention, having been viewed 3.5 million times as of May 2025.
Following the clip from Atlantic Sport Highlights being posted, it was cropped and reposted by multiple social media accounts:
- On September 24, 2023, by BR_OpenIce on Instagram, captioned Did his best ref impression on his way outta there 🤣🦓 (via @AS Highlights ) #hockey #fyp #hockeytok #nhl #hockeyplayer #referee #funny, with 1.2 million views
- On September 27, 2023, by NHLfanNick on TikTok, captioned #nhl #hockey #sports #fyp and on-video captioned How should the Ref respond? 😵, with 4.4 million views
- On October 2, 2023, by the_panda_referee on Instagram, captioned Ah the three blind mice 🐁 comment, no gets old 😂, with 10,000 views
The original source of the clip, at the 30m 39s mark, is a YouTube video from AO Live titled East Coast Blizzard vs Moncton Rallye Motors Nissan Flyers, which was posted on May 17, 2022 after being filmed during the U18 Major Atlantic Championships on April 23, 2022.
A cropped version of the clip was made into a GIF and is commonly used in hockey-related Reddit threads to respond to questionable calls and no-calls by hockey referees.
