About

Cake Slice refers to a four-panel image from a cartoon of a hand cutting a slice out of a chocolate cake and then taking the rest of the cake for themselves. After being paired online with relatable captions for several years, the image developed into an object labeling meme where the cake, hand, and slice are labeled differently.

Origin

The cartoon from which the still comes from is "Donald's Cousin Gus," a Disney short from 1939 in which Donald Duck's cousin enters his home and engages in gluttonous behavior (scene shown below).

The image began spreading online in mid-2015. A GIF of the clip was posted to /r/me_irl on March 19th, 2015[2] (shown below, left). One of the earliest known posts to use the image was posted to Memedroid[1] on May 17th, 2015 by user Decio_K.Sete under the caption "A hungry child was trying to feed herself while her mum was working.." (shown below, right).

On June 17th, 2015, Instagram user h3llo.gorg3ous posted the stills with the caption "Me," gaining 90 likes (shown below, left). On June 6th, 2015, Instagram user sexualising uploaded a pic with a caption reading "And that's how I eat cake, wbu?", gaining over 75,000 likes.
