Captain America "So, You Got Detention" is a series of image macros that parody a scene from the 2017 Marvel superhero film Spider-Man: Homecoming that features the character Captain America sitting on a backwards chair and saying, "So, you got detention." Online, people replace "detention" with other humorous or absurd situations.

Origin

On June 28th, 2017, the film Spider-man: Homecoming premiered in the United States. In the film, a teacher gives the protagonist Peter Parker (played by Tom Holland) detention. While in punishment, Parker watches a video that opens with the Captain America sitting down and saying, "So, you got detention" (shown below).



The following year, on May 11th, 2018, Twitter [1] user @inkopolis tweeted a screen-capture of Captain America sitting down. They captioned the photo, "So. You got cucked." The post (shown below) received more than 1,000 retweets and 2,000 likes in five days.

Within the next few days, the format grew in popularity. On May 13th, Twitter[2] user @trilllizard666 tweeted the image. They captioned, "so you went Horny On Main." The post (shown below, left) received more than 7,800 retweets and 19,000 likes in three days.

The next day, Twitter[3] user @OneTrickNomad tweeted, "So You didn't credit the artist." The post (shown below, center) received more than 5,400 retweets and 12,000 likes in two days. On May 15th, Twitter[4] user @charizartluver tweeted a sketch version of the image. They captioned, "So, You merged your lineart with your sketch layer,." Within 24 hours, the image received more than 3,200 retweets and 8,500 likes.

That day, Twitter[5] user @ThatGuyRagnal tweeted a gif of the scene with the caption "So. You made a meme, but used a still image instead of a gif." The post (shown below) received more than 10,000 retweets and 24,000 likes in 24 hours.

Several media outlets covered the emergence of the meme, including The Daily Dot, [6] Dorkly[7] and more.
