About

Spiders are eight legged arthropods in the class Arachnida equipped with venom-injecting fangs. Online, discussions about spiders often revolve around their ability to frighten and repulse people, typically when found in a home.

Online History

On April 4th, 2003, Klipsch Home Audio Forums^[2] member kenrat boy submitted a thread titled "Look at this wolf spider!", featuring several photographs of a large huntsman spider discovered hiding behind a clock in a home in Darwin, Australia (shown below). The photographs circulated widely online over the next several years, earning the spider the nickname "Clock Spider".

On December 30th, 2006, YouTuber Andrew Struthers uploaded a satirical video titled "Spiders On Drugs," in which a wood spider is given a variety of psychoactive drugs (shown below, left). In the first eight years, the videos gained over 36 million views and 34,000 comments. On March 10th, 2007, YouTube JCVdude uploaded a video of a giant tarantula resting on his hand (shown below, right).

On July 7th, 2009, the /r/spiders^[1] subreddit was launched for discussions related to arachnids, gaining more than 14,800 subscribers over the next five years. On December 28th, 2013, Viner paglo uploaded a video in which he disturbs a mass of daddy long leg spiders, which gathered upwards of 105,000 revines and 93,000 likes in the next six months. There is also a related viral video which has been uploaded on May 24, 2012 by Youtuber CcanCcaglar, titled as "Trolling A Spider", which has gathered more than 2 million views (shown below).

Paying Bills With Spider Drawings

Seven Legged Spider (a.k.a Paying Bills with Drawing of Spider) refers to the e-mail conversations that took place in October 2008 between David Thorne and Jane Gilles. More specifically, Seven Legged Spider is a comical drawing made by David, who offered his stick-figure artwork as a payment for his overdue utility bills. Needless to say, his drawing was rejected by the company’s representative Jane, but the playful, cutesy e-mail exchange between them lived on to become internet famous.

Nope

Nope is an informal variant of the negative response “no.” On the web, this emphatic expression is used to indicate fear, disgust or general distaste towards something, most prominently stories or media relating to spiders, in similar vein to other dismissive phrases like “do not want” or “kill it with fire”.

Spiders Georg is a fictional character that was created on Tumblr as a joke about a false statistic regarding the average number of spiders a person may consume each year.

Hot Choclety Milk

Hot Choclety Milk, an intentional misspelling of "Hot Chocolate Milk," refers to an MS Paint cartoon illustration of a spider offering a mug of hot chocolate that began circulating on the microblogging site Tumblr in July 2013.

Critters Posting on 4chan

Critters Posting on 4chan is a two-pane image series comprised of a screenshot of a 4chan post written in defense of a particular species in the animal kingdom and an illustration anthropomorphically portraying the aforementioned creature as the original poster.
