About
Director Christof, also known as Ed Harris Directing The Truman Show, Now X or simply Truman Show Meme, is an image macro and reaction image meme format depicting Christof (played by actor Ed Harris) from the 1998 comedy-drama film The Truman Show wearing glasses, a headset and a hat while looking up toward a monitor. The meme references a scene in the movie where Christof, the director and creator of The Truman Show, issues instructions to a hidden production crew, manipulating Truman’s environment. The close-up of him speaking into the headset is typically used in memes and jokes about orchestrating events behind the scenes, referencing anything from inconveniences in people's day-to-day lives to major real-world events.
The Christof Truman Show meme first appeared in mid-2018, but did not experience widespread usage and virality until mid-2026, when it became an image macro and image caption format as people began adding text captions above Ed Harris to make it seem like he was the one causing things to happen in real life. The meme is often used to highlight global events that seemed too perfectly timed, too absurd or too chaotic to be real, similar to Christof's character in the film. The phrasal template "Now X" is most commonly used in captions alongside the image, making it appear as if Christof is giving the directions. Some memes also use the screenshot as an exploitable format, editing Christof with other visual elements or replacing him with other people and characters.
Origin
The picture of Christof (Ed Harris) used in the meme comes from a scene in the comedy-drama movie The Truman Show, which was released on June 5th, 1998.
In the film, Christof is the creator, executive producer and primary antagonist. He oversees the artificial world of Seahaven, a massive television set where the film's protagonist, Truman Burbank (Jim Carrey), unknowingly lives under constant surveillance as the star of a globally broadcast reality program.
The specific scene from Truman Show comes from a moment when, in an attempt to bring Truman back under his control, Christof reintroduces Truman to his father, Kirk, under the guise of losing his memory in the boating incident. The clip shows Christof directing things like fog in the environment and switching cameras.
The earliest known meme using this specific moment and image of Christof comes from an Imgur[1] post by user cena64274101 on July 15th, 2018, which was uploaded and shared to Reddit that same day. The post title reads, "Now ditch Sam Pepper," and was in reference to an incident involving IRL streamer Ice Poseidon and YouTuber Sam Pepper, who frequently collaborated with him.
The original Reddit post on the /r/IcePoseidon subreddit has since been lost after the subreddit was banned in the following years, but the Imgur upload remains, garnering over 530 views in eight years.
