About

Donald Trump Van Gogh Parodies refers to a series of photoshopped images combining Dutch Post-Impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh's portrait in which his left ear is cut off and bandaged with the 2024 Donald Trump Rally Shooting incident, after which former President Donald Trump said on social media that he was shot in the upper right ear during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. The Trump Van Gogh parodies were popularized on Twitter / X, Reddit and TikTok in mid-July 2024 following the assassination attempt.

Origin

On July 13th, 2024, a failed assassination attempt on United States former President and presidential candidate Donald Trump occurred at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.[1] Later that night, Trump posted on his Truth social media platform that he was shot in the upper right ear (seen below, left), which was later reposted on X[2] by his team, amassing more than 162,000 likes and 26,000 reposts in two days.

Shortly after the incident, several photoshopped edits combined Trump's shot ear picture with Vincent van Gogh's iconic portrait after he cut off his own ear (seen below, right), which were then posted on social media. For example, X[3] user @Roshan_Rinaldi posted one of the earliest parodies of the Trump nan Gogh photoshop on July 13th, 2024, which amassed more than 54,000 likes and 8,100 reposts in a day.

Donald J. Trump @realDonaldTrump I want to thank The United States Secret Service, and all of Law Enforcement, for their rapid response on the shooting that just took place in Butler, Pennsylvania. Most importantly, I want to extend my condolences to the family of the person at the Rally who was killed, and also to the family of another person that was badly injured. It is incredible that such an act can take place in our Country. Nothing is known at this time about the shooter, who is now dead. I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear. I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin. Much bleeding took place, so I realized then what was happening. GOD BLESS AMERICA!

Spread

Parodies of Donald Trump's injured right upper ear and Van Gogh's portrait appeared across multiple social media platforms over the next few days following the shooting incident.

For instance, on July 14th, 2024, the X[4] page @HumansNoContext posted a version of the Trump van Gogh photoshop, which amassed more than 75,000 likes and 8,700 reposts in a day (seen below, left). On the same day, Redditor[5] UberVincent posted his version of the Trump Van Gogh meme to the /r/PhotoshopRequest subreddit (seen below, right).
