Dream Did What? refers to a meme trend on X / Twitter that involves posting reaction images expressing shock and disgust with the caption "Dream did what?," usually fully capitalized. The catchphrase achieved initial popularity as an out-of-context meme during the Dream vs. Gumball controversy in mid-November 2023; however, as an unverified recording of Dream allegedly sending his moans to a minor on Snapchat in 2019 surfaced, the format started being used to reference the video instead.
Origin
On November 17th, 2023, following the initial phase of the Dream vs. Gumball controversy that unfolded on social media in mid-November, X[1] user @HITONOT posted a reaction image of YouTuber Markiplier screaming captioned, "CAPTION UR LAST SAVED IMAGE WITH: 'DREAM DID WHAT??'" The post (shown below) received over 350 reposts and 550 likes in four days.
Spread
The post was followed by other users posting reaction images of shock and disgust combined with the catchphrase out-of-context, creating an impression that the YouTuber did something worthy of the reactions, with the trend first achieving virality on November 20th, 2023.
For example, on November 19th, X[2] user @arrozconlimas made one such post that gained over 50 reposts and 480 likes in two days (shown below, left). Later that day, X[3] user @MZeff111 reposted a Dream vs. Gumball fan art made by artist @ThaSpiciest, with the post garnering over 760 reposts and 6,500 likes in the same period (shown below, right).
On November 20th, an unverified recording of Dream allegedly sending his moans to a minor on Snapchat in 2019 was spread on X / Twitter, adding to the grooming allegations made against the streamer in 2022. Following the viral spread of the videos, newer "Dream did what?" examples referenced the recordings rather than were posted out-of-context (example[4] shown below).
On November 21st, 2023, "DREAM DID WHAT" trended on X / Twitter with over 30,000 posts.
