About

Dreaming Pillow Motif refers to a series of redraws based on an image of two people sleeping on a bed. In the template, one person has bubbles coming from their head suggesting a dream, only for the "dream" bubble to feature the person sleeping next to them. The trend grew popular on Twitter / X in 2024 as artists drew ships in the template.

Origin

On December 3rd, 2011, the "My mom is so cool" Blogspot^[1] uploaded the earliest known version of the template, showing two people sleeping on a bed and lines indicating one is "dreaming" of the other (shown below). On June 14th, 2024, Twitter / X^[2] user @hinapukas reposted the image with a caption asking the artists to draw their favorite ship using the image as a reference. The post received more than 4,400 reposts and 36,400 likes in one week.

Spread

Over the following days, @hinapukas's post grew popular as artists used the image as a redraw reference on Twitter / X. For example, on June 17th, 2024, Twitter / X^[3] user @bztvzt uploaded fan art of Hololive VTuber Shiori Novella and Nerissa Ravencroft, gaining over 273 reposts and 2,200 likes in four days (shown below, left). On the same day, Twitter / X^[4] user @Rou__uoR uploaded SPY x FAMILY fan art and received over 827 reposts and 6,000 likes in four days (shown below, right).

On June 16th, 2024, Twitter / X^[5] user @tropiculuet uploaded a redraw that received over 1,800 reposts and 23,400 likes in five days (shown below, left). On June 19th, 2024, Twitter / X^[6] user @lisayuki10v3 uploaded Project Sekai fan art that received over 910 reposts and 5,300 likes in two days (shown below, right).
