Overview

PewDiePie 100-Day Drawing Progress refers to discussions and debates about streamer and YouTuber PewDiePie (real name Felix Arvid Ulf Kjellberg) learning how to draw and his progress in doing so. PewDiePie first posted about how he was learning to draw in 2023 and posted a video titled, "I Drew Every Day For 100 DAYS!" in 2024. The YouTuber's drawing videos were often evoked to criticize people who use AI image-generating software instead of learning to draw from scratch in late 2023 and early 2024.

Background

On November 23rd, 2023, PewDiePie posted a YouTube[1] video titled, "Teaching myself to draw for no reason," gathering over 3 million views in two months. The video showed PewDiePie's art progress over the course of 30 days, with the YouTuber primarily drawing on paper.

On January 31st, 2024, PewDiePie posted a YouTube[2] video titled, "I Drew Every Day for 100 DAYS!" and showed his art progress as he learned to draw anime-style art every day for 100 days. His approach to learning to draw involved the use of color, with Felix assigning a different color to different days and learning to draw using specific color combinations. His video gathered over 1 million views in a day (seen below).

Online Reactions

Soon after PewDiePie's initial post about learning to draw in November 2023, his fans began discussing the merits of learning to draw over learning to use AI to make art. On November 23rd, 2023, X[3] user @KezieDra shared PewDiePie's "Teaching myself to draw" thumbnail, saying, "Repost this to scare AI bros." The post gathered over 140,000 likes in three months (seen below, left).

The post also gathered backlash from AI-generator users, as documented in a post by X[4] user @vibrantrida that same day, which gathered over 40,000 likes in three months (seen below, right).

On December 2nd, YouTuber[8] SamDoesArts posted a video reaction to PewDiePie's November upload, gathering over 500,000 views in two months (seen below).

Fans had generally positive reactions to PewDiePie's 100-day drawing progress video as well, with many fans commenting on the speed of his progress. His January 31st, 2024, video also drew comparisons to AI art, with X[5] user @RyaiArt writing, "AI guzzlers: I couldn't learn to draw because I didn't have the resources you did, stop gatekeeping art / Pewdiepie: draws in a book for 100 days." The post gathered over 150,000 likes in a day (seen below, left).

However, @RyaiArt's post also received responses from people who thought PewDiePie should not be an example of how much your art can progress with effort because he is a millionaire with the time to spare to work on drawing (seen below, right).

X[6] user @wushiwaaaa made a post on January 31st, 2024, reacting to PewDiePie's 100-day progress and expressing disappointment in the speed of their own artistic development, gathering over 80,000 likes in a day (seen below, left). Also that day, X[7] user @datcravat made a post in response to people expressing insecurities about their own art, saying that PewDiePie was still in the "replication" stage of being an artist and was not making original art, but instead using references.

Nothing makes the AI art "community" look worse than seeing a man learning new skills and saying "You stupid bitch, why would you sit there and learn to create when you can sit there on a prompt having to constantly generate the same prompt over and over until you finally get that pose you wanted? What a fucking loser."
