Existential Roast Emoji, best known by the caption You Are Too Invested in How You Are Perceived That You Cannot Fully Enjoy Living, refers to a series of memes based on a stock image of a yellow emoji pointing a finger and laughing. In memes, the image is captioned with roasts that address deep-rooted, existential issues, such as fear of change and crippling concern with societal perception.
Origin
On July 26th, 2011, artist Yayayoyo uploaded a vector illustration of a yellow emoji pointing and laughing titled "Laughing and pointing emoticon" to Shutterstock[1] and other stock image websites (shown below).
Prior to October 9th, 2020, Tumblr[2][3] user diavop posted an image macro based on the picture captioned, "You follow me" (shown below; original author unknown). The post received over 26,500 likes and reblogs in four years.
Prior to April 22nd, 2022, an unknown Tumblr[4] user posted a collage of three stock emoji illustrations, including the laughing and pointing emoji, captioning the images with a scolding remark about inability "to act on your own desire" due to being "too invested in the wider spectacle." The post (shown below) garnered over 17,000 likes and reblogs in two years.
Spread
The second image from the post saw viral spread online in the following year. For example, on November 19th, 2022, Tumblr[5] user sacred-portal made a repost that garnered over 5,700 reposts and 8,500 likes in two years.
On October 6th, 2023, Tumblr[6] user sovietnam posted the earliest found recaptioned version of the meme, with the new caption similarly targeting deep-rooted psychological issues. The post (shown below) garnered over 73,000 likes and reblogs in nine months and was widely circulated online in the following months.[7]
In 2023 and 2024, more versions of the meme were shared online, primarily on Tumblr.
