Go On Then What Are They Saying is a four-panel exploitable webcomic in which two soldiers decrypt "secret Nazi communications" and users online replace the decrypted messages for humorous effect.

Origin

On May 22nd, 2018, the webcomic Stonetoss published a four-panel comic entitled "Enigma." The comic features two soldiers in World War II decrpyting "secret Nazi communications." However, the communications are simply "Asuka is best girl," referring to a Neon Genesis Evangelion memes. When uploaded to Facebook [1] that day, the post (shown below) received more than 1,300 reactions and 700 shares in less than one month.

On June 13th, 2018, Redditor [2] last_laugh13 in /r/MemeEconomy posted a version of the comic in which the punchline is removed. The post (shown below, left) recevied more than 15,600 points (86% upvoted) and 475 comments in less than 24 hours.

Over the next several hours, Redditors on several subreddits, including /r/dankmemes, /r/gaming and /r/FlashTV, posted variations of the meme (examples below, center and right).
