Hamburger Sound Effect refers to an audio recording of an unknown man pronouncing the word "Hamburger". Initially popularized by a YouTube Poop video, in Spring 2019 the soundbite gained a significant popularity in video edits.

Origin

Before May 28th, 2008, YouTube user KroboProductions uploaded a YouTube poop titled "Robotnik's Face is Politically Incorrect".[1][2] In the video, a soundbite of a man saying "Hamburger" of unknown origin is used at 1:06 mark. While KroboProductions account been deleted prior to June 2010, on June 30th, 2010 YouTube user OmgNameWaster reuploaded the video (shown below).[3]

The video used in the YTP originates from episode 17 "Over the Hill Hero" of season one of animated series Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog.[4]

Spread

Before November 15th, 2017, an unknown user posted a clip from the video in which Sonic says "hamburger" to the platform. On November 15th, 2017, YouTube user zander jarvis reuploaded the clip (shown below), mentioning its Instagram origin in the comments.[5][6]

On July 24th, 2018, Twitter user @SB2749 uploaded a reedited version of the clip in which soundbite of an unknown man saying "San Diego" was used. On the following day, @SB2749 uploaded an edited scene of 2005 film Madagascar in using the "Hamburger" soundbite (shown below).[7] The tweet gained over 170 retweets and 500 likes in one year. On August 13th, YouTube user kool fulms.v2 reuploaded the video as "Hamburger meme #1" which gained over 55,500 in nine months.[8]


Starting in March 2019, the sound effect saw a significant increase in use on Instagram. For example, on March 20th, Instagram user fr1ck.mp4 posted a meme using the soundbite which gained over 110,200 views and 9,900 likes in two months.[9] On April 12th, 2019, Instagram user largetrap posted an edit of a promotional Avengers: Endgame video using the soundbite (shown below, center).[10] Following the surge of popularity of the meme on the platform, several video complications were posted to YouTube.

On May 24th, 2019, YouTuber PewDiePie reviewed Hamburger Sound Effect memes in a Meme Review episode.
