About

I Don't Know Kavanaugh the Judge is a snowclone made in parody of a Washington Post article about United States Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh titled "I don’t know Kavanaugh the judge. But Kavanaugh the carpool dad is one great guy." The article was mocked for what many considered its irrelevance to the discussion surrounding Kavanaugh as a potential Supreme Court judge, and parodied in snowclones with the format "I don't know Kavanaugh the judge, but Kavanaugh the X is one great guy."

Origin

On July 10th, 2018, the Washington Post published an article written by Julie O'Brien, a neighbor of Trump Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.[1] O'Brien's daughter is classmates with one of Kavanaugh's. The article, titled "I don’t know Kavanaugh the judge. But Kavanaugh the carpool dad is one great guy" is meant to be a glowing testament to Kavanaugh's moral character, qualifications as a judge aside.

Spread

After the article was posted, many Twitter users mocked it for being irrelevant to the debate surrounding Trump's pick of Kavanaugh to replace retiring justice Anthony Kennedy. Twitter user @Annehelen pointed out it didn't matter how nice a Supreme Court nominee was in a car pool, gaining over 40 retweets and 300 likes (shown below, left). MSNBC pundit Chris Hayes stated "I can't believe this got published," gaining over 1,200 retweets (shown below, right).

In parody of the article, many Twitter users turned title into a snowclone in which Kavanaugh played many different roles other than "carpool dad." For example, Twitter user @BrandyJensen tweeted a joke characterizing Kavanaugh as a sex fetishist that gained over 50 retweets and 800 likes (shown below, left). User @pattymo did the same, gaining over 200 retweets and 2,700 likes (shown below, right).
