The selfie of Mikkelsen possibly comes from the 2014 "selfie issue" of Flaunt magazine and was first used in memes in late 2020, including snowclone memes that replace "X" with something else and redraws.

Origin

The source of the Mads Mikkelsen selfie, showing him standing outside in front of a body of water and a sign reading, "barriers," is unknown. It may come from the 2014 "selfie issue" of Flaunt magazine, which was promoted on Twitter^[1] by @madssource on August 1st, 2014, sharing a different selfie. In the selfie, his mustache and haircut look similar to his look in the "DILF" meme. The account provided a link^[2] with the tweet, but it does not lead to the selfie. On April 3rd, 2017, Pinterest^[3] user Leonor Senaposted an edited version of the selfie with the caption, "I hope I am not only a DILF to u guys but also a friend" (shown below). It is unclear if they created the meme.

The earliest known edit of the meme was posted by Tumblr^[4] user iiinnuendos on November 26th, 2020 and shows Mikkelsen with a Red Vs. Blue helmet on, captioned, "I hope I am not only a DILF to u guys but also a friend," garnering over 300 notes in two years (shown below).

On December 3rd, 2020, Twitter^[5] user @fittingaa_music posted a video placing Ace Attorney music over the photo, garnering over 1,500 likes and 400 retweets in two years (shown below).

On December 13th, 2021, Redditor keratinh posted a redraw of the meme to /r/Cookierun,^[6] garnering over 50 upvotes in eight months. On December 22nd, Tumblr^[7] user whirlybirbs posted a redraw of the meme drawing Mikkelsen as Silco from League of Legends, garnering over 1,800 notes in eight months (shown below).

On February 22nd, 2022, Tumblr^[8] user fungusamongusblog2 posted an edit of the original meme replacing "DILF" with "mentally ill," garnering over 17,700 notes in six months (shown below, left). On April 25th, a Redditor posted a version of the meme to /r/okbuddybaka,^[9] garnering over 3,100 upvotes in four months (shown below, right).

On May 6th, Twitter^[10] user @theartofasty posted a version replacing "DILF" with "an artist" "friend" with "threat to society," garnering over 41,000 likes and 6,700 retweets in three months (shown below).
