Gaining initial popularity in 2017, the copypasta has since been used in various memes.

On November 21st, 2013, YouTuber[1] EDP445 (EatDatPussy445) uploaded a video in which he talks about whether masturbation can be considered a sport, comparing it against golf and fishing and analyzing the amount of physical effort involved. In the end of the video, EDP445 concludes that "jacking off" can be considered a sport. The video accumulated over 1.9 million views as of November 12th, 2020.

The video did not catch mainstream attention until early 2017, gaining only 50,000 views by January 3rd, 2017. On that day, iFunny[2] user ironicnoodle made the earliest found post about the video, posting a moblie screenshot that received 36 smiles in three years. More screenshots of the video were posted on iFunny[3][4] in the following months. Prior to April 14th, 2017, an unknown iFunny user uploaded a 40-second opening segment of the video (post could not be discovered). On April 14th, YouTube[5] user i_xyy reuploaded the clip to YouTube, where it gained over 137,800 views in three years (shown below).
On June 2nd, 2017, iFunny[6] user kittle posted the earliest found image macro based on the copypasta (shown below, left). In the following years, the copypasta maintained a moderate presence on iFunny,[7] appearing in numorous posts on the platform (example shown below, right).
On May 14th, 2019, Instagram[8] user ghostcoffeee posted a Boys Locker Room meme (shown below) based on the copypasta that received over 1,900 and 24,600 views in one year and was widely circulated online in the following days (original author unknown). For example, a May 18th, 2019, repost by iFunny[9] user RizzoBro gained over 72,000 smiles in one year.
On May 10th, 2020, EDP445 posted a follow-up video[10] titled "Jacking Off Is Definitely a Sport" which received over 1.3 million views in six months (shown below).
Following the sequel video, the copypasta received a larger presence online, being used as source material for image macros and humorous videos, as well as on its own.
