About

Jonah Hill "Cut It Out" GIF, also known as Jonah Hill Stop GIF, Jonah Hill No GIF or Jonah Hill Nah GIF, refers to a reaction GIF taken from footage of the 2012 Academy Awards (Oscars) broadcast. The clip shows actor Jonah Hill in a black suit or tuxedo doing a "cut it out" gesture, a downward side-swipe motion with an open palm, as the camera zooms in on him among the crowd. The GIF saw sporadic use across the internet throughout the 2010s as a reaction meme or in GIF caption memes, notably resurfacing on TikTok, especially in comment sections, during the 2020s.

Origin

The GIF was derived from footage of the 2012 Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars, which took place on February 26th, 2012.[1] The footage of Jonah Hill is preceded by the presentation of the award for "Best Visual Effects" by actors Ben Stiller and Emma Stone, the latter of the two singing embarrassingly, and a camera pans to Hill, who is seen making the gesture among the crowd.

The first use of the GIF as a reaction is unknown, as the GIF had spread throughout the internet shortly after the awards ceremony, but the earliest indexing of the GIF can be found on the Reaction GIFs[2] site, uploaded on April 18th, 2014, with the caption, "Jonah Hill thinks you should cut it out."

Spread

The Jonah Hill Cut It Out GIF remained in use over the years due to its wide applicability, primarily being used as a simple reaction image on social media during the 2010s.

On September 18th, 2020, video game developer Naughty Dog, as part of an ongoing series in which it recreates memes and GIFs with characters from its in-game engine, posted a version of the GIF depicting Ellie from The Last of Us Part II making the gesture, garnering over 80.7 million views on Giphy[8] in roughly five years.

The GIF began to see a significant resurgence on TikTok in the early 2020s, becoming a prevalent reaction in comment sections sometime around 2025.

One of the earliest traces of the meme appearing on TikTok came from TikTok[3] user @lucylaneofficial on March 12th, 2023, who recorded footage from the Oscar presentation and captioned the video "me" while showing Stone and "Another unavailable man" when panned to Hill. The video received over 9.5 million likes and 1.2 million likes in three years.

In March 2025, TikTok officially rolled out the ability to add photos and GIFs to comment sections.[5] The new "sticker" feature resulted in a boom of new and old reaction images proliferating the platform and regaining interest online.

On September 22nd, 2025, TikTok[6] user @.gif000 posted the GIF so that it may be used with TikTok's sticker feature, allowing users to instantly save GIFs and images for use in comment sections. The video received over 1.7 million views and 114,900 likes in less than one year.
