Kang Council meme depicting Jonathan Majors from ant man and the wasp quantumania.

About

Kang Council Cheering, also known as Council of Kangs Cheering or Kangs Celebrando in Spanish, refers to a mid-credits scene from the 2023 Marvel film Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania in which a stadium filled with variants of Kang the Conqueror (played by Jonathan Majors) is cheering, celebrating and screaming. The scene became an exploitable meme template, predominantly on TikTok, paired with a remix of "What Is Love," similar to the Mike O'Hearn 'Baby Don't Hurt Me' memes.

Origin

On February 17th, 2023, the Marvel film Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania was released in American theaters.[1] The movie's mid-credits scene showed a stadium filled with variants of Kang the Conqueror cheering (YouTube[2] upload shown below).

On May 20th, 2023, TikToker[3] @zxtic_films used the scene in a video meme that had a POV caption, portraying the cheering Kangs as their shampoo bottles watching them win an imaginary argument in the shower. The video had a TikTok[4] sound that was a slowed + reverb remix of "What Is Love." Over the course of 17 days, the video gained roughly 1.5 million plays and 314,700 likes (shown below). The video is currently the first discovered memetic usage of the scene.

Spread

Continuing into late May 2023, the format gained variant usage from other TikTokers who continued to use the TikTok[4] sound. For instance, on May 21st, 2023, TikToker[5] @dlamezzzz posted an iteration about their LEGOs "watching the greatest battle in history go down," gaining roughly 302,700 plays and 55,900 likes in 16 days (shown below, left). On May 27th, TikToker[6] @weihenstephan22 posted an iteration about their ancestors watching them purchase the Griddy emote in Fortnite, earning roughly 3.5 million plays and 671,100 likes in 10 days (shown below, right).

Around the same time, iterations and blank templates of the format surfaced on YouTube.[7] Additionally, many Spanish-speaking TikTokers[8][9] posted iterations in their own language.
