About
Keke Tang is a character from Love Live! series Love Live! Superstar. In the show, she has moved from China to Japan because she wants to be a school idol. Due to her Chinese origin, she gained popularity in various Chinese-themed memes.
Origin
On January 14th, 2021, Love Live! YouTube[1] Official Channel uploaded a video that introduced KekeTangr. The video received more than 310,000 views in 11 months (shown below).
Her first appearance was on Episode 1 of Love Live! Superstar titled "まだ名もないキモチ" (Romaji. Mada Na mo nai Kimochi. Eng. This Yet Unknown Feeling). In the episode, Keke is passing through Kanon Shibuya while she goes to school. She grows interested in Kanon's voice and tries to invite her to became a school idol with her in Chinese (shown below).

Since Keke is from Shanghai, China, she gained popularity among the fandom, who created Chinese-themed memes around her. For example on September 17th, 2021, Facebook[2] page Believe in The Tyrone uploaded fan art of Keke Tang by using a Tom and Jerry reference and the Chin Cheng Hanji meme. The video received more than 3,300 reactions and 2,800 shares. On the same day, Tyrone uploaded the video to his YouTube.[3] It received 16,000 views (shown below).
On July 3rd, 2021, Pixiv[4] user COKb-LanRu uploaded fan art of Keke Tang in front of a tank, referencing the Tank Man meme. The image received 721 views (shown below, left). On October 2nd, 2021, Reddit[5] user Daddyn-noob uploaded an image about Genshin Impact that used the Yes Sir Glory to China meme to /r/Genshin_Memepact subreddit. The post received 810 upvotes (shown below, right).
On November 4th, 2021, Facebook[6] page "I put waifu in a box and burn them up" uploaded an image of Keke Tang has burned by Winnie the Pooh, referencing the Xi Jinping Winnine the Pooh Comparisons meme. The post received more than 1,200 reactions and 377 shares (shown below, left). On November 9th, 2021, Facebook[7] user Leonel Membreño uploaded a video of Keke bowing down to President of China Xi Jinping "Nijigasaki HS -- Dreamy Starlines with a smile! to Next TOKIMEKI" group. The video received more than 1,100 reactions and 1,600 shares (shown below, right).
