About
Kelly Oubre 'Hit By A Car' Conspiracies refers to rumors that spread following a report that Philadelphia 76ers basketball player Kelly Oubre was the victim of a hit and run incident on the streets of Philadelphia. However, police were unable to find video footage of the incident, leading to speculation he made up the story to explain an injury or for some other, unknown reason. As theories spread, TMZ published Ring camera footage of Oubre returning home after getting hit by a car, quelling the rush of conspiracy theories.
Origin
On November 11th, 2023, it was reported that Philadelphia 76ers sustained injuries after getting hit by a car on the streets of Philadelphia.[1]
However, on November 15th, the Philadelphia Inquirer[2] reported that there was no police footage of the incident, as would be expected had the hit-and-run taken place where Oubre said it happened.
"The Police Department currently does not have any video or photographic evidence that depicts this collision," said a Philadelphia sheriff.
The Inquirer's report cited a source who said Oubre, who is new to Philadelphia, may have given police an incorrect location of the incident, as he is new to the area.
Spread
Once news spread that police did not have footage of the incident, social media users began offering theories about why, theorizing that Oubre was lying about the incident for an unknown reason. For example, on November 15th, user @againstbadbooks[3] argued that Oubre faked getting hit by a car to avoid upcoming court dates (shown below, left). The account @PhillyCrimeUpd[4] posted a rumor that "a source" told them the hit and run story was a cover up for a domestic violence incident. Another theory that spread was Oubre was beaten up by a pimp.[5]
On November 16th, TMZ posted footage from Oubre's Ring camera returning home after the accident. In the video, Oubre tells his partner that he got hit by a car. This led to shock that TMZ was able to obtain the footage so quickly[6] and was seen by most as confirmation that the hit-and-run did happen.
