King Charles, also known as Changmao 长毛, is the name given to a shaggy-haired dog in a series of dog shelter videos that went viral on Douyin (Chinese TikTok), Instagram and Twitter / X in May 2025. The videos show the dog breaking up fights and quietly dominating other dogs in the shelter, oftentimes by placing his paws on other barking or misbehaving dogs. The videos originate from the Douyin page 胡子大叔爱犬部落 or "Uncle Beard Dog Tribe," where the dog is referred to as Changmao or "long hair." Changmao went viral on Instagram and X under the name "King Charles," with internet users commenting on his aura and commending his ability to make a large cane corso bow down to him. Other notable viral Chinese dogs include Xiaopang.

Origin

The videos of the dog now known as "King Charles" originate from the Douyin[1] (Chinese TikTok) page 胡子大叔爱犬部落, or "Uncle Beard Dog Tribe." The Douyin user's bio reads, "养犬只是个人爱好,会不定期更新视频,喜欢的朋友可以点个关注,谢谢," which translates to, "Raising dogs is just a personal hobby. I will update videos from time to time. Friends who like it can follow me. Thank you." The user has gathered over 76,000 followers and accumulated over 800,000 likes on Douyin as of May 22nd.


Douyin user "胡子大叔爱犬部落" or "Uncle Beard Dog Tribe" is the origin of the alpha dog King Charles' videos, where a shaggy-looking medium style dog regularly tames his packmates in a quiet, dominating manner. The Douyin user's bio translates to, "Raising dogs is just a personal hobby. I will update videos from time to time. Friends who like it can follow me. Thank you."

One of his most viewed Douyin[2] uploads shows the shaggy-haired dog, whom he calls "Changmao" or "Long hair." Changmao can be seen dominating another dog by quietly placing his paws on it until the dog calms down and stops barking. The video was posted on May 18th, 2025, and gathered over 350,000 likes in four days.



Instagram[3] user @newlu_princess began reposting clips from the aforementioned Douyin account on May 19th, 2025, and is credited for coining the name "King Charles."

The earliest known record of the shaggy-haired dog being called "King Charles" is a May 19th, 2025, post captioned, "The industrious King Charles has started to patrol his kingdom again, teaching the disobedient subjects a lesson." The post gathered over 4.3 million views and 180,000 likes in three days.

The Instagram[4] page @newlu_princess continued to post videos about "King Charles" over the following days, gathering over 19 million views and 900,000 likes on a May 20th, 2025, video captioned, "Even if there is a fight with King Charles, generally speaking, King Charles will not hold it against you after you admit your mistake." The video shows Charles correcting another dog, disbanding and then allowing the dog to lick his face.



The meme spread to X / Twitter on May 20th, with X[5] user @Mericamemed reposted the clip of King Charles trotting over to subdue a dog fight, highlighting how the cane corso bowed down when the shaggy dog passed by him. The caption on the tweet read, "Cane corso: bows my leige," gathering over 60,000 likes in two days.

On May 21st, X[6] user @SavinTheBees quoted the post, writing, "I need to know what buddy do to have insane aura like that," and gathered over 300,000 likes in a day.


On May 20th, 2025, X user @Mericamemed reposted a clip of King Charles trotting over to subdue a dog fight, highlighting how the cane corso bowed down when the shaggy dog passed by him. The caption on the tweet read, "Cane corso: *bows* my leige," gathering over 60,000 likes in two days. X user @SavinTheBees quoted @Mericamemed's post, writing, "I need to know what buddy do to have insane aura like that," and gathering over 300,000 likes in a day.

Also on May 21st, 2025, X[7] user @SuperViiral posted a thread of King Charles' videos, calling him, "The dog with the most aura in the world." The caption on the post read, "🧵 EL PERRO CON MÁS AURA del mundo : HILO CON TODOS SUS VÍDEOS," and the initial post gathered over 270,000 likes in a day.
