Larry David Attacking Elmo refers to a viral video of comedian Larry David pretending to throttle Elmo after the Sesame Street character's viral tweet asking Twitter how they were doing. The humorous incident led to ironically dramatic posts about the "assault" on Elmo and Larry David gave a jokey apology for the incident.

Origin

On January 29th, 2024, the Twitter account for Sesame Street Muppet Elmo tweeted, "Just checking in, how is everyone doing?" This led to many responses where people gave dramatic and intense responses about their mental health and the state of the world.

On February 1st, Elmo appeared on The Today Show to discuss the viral tweet. Comedian Larry David was also on the show to discuss the upcoming final season of Curb Your Enthusiasm. As Elmo discussed the incident, Larry David playfully throttled Elmo, to the exaggerated horror of the hosts (shown below).

The incident led to exaggeratedly dramatic condemnations of the "attack" on Elmo on social media. On February 1st, 2024, Twitter user @McR1B69^[1] used the You're Laughing? meme about the incident, gaining over 30 retweets and 220 likes in one day (shown below, left). User @fred_beretta^[2] gave an exaggerated reaction to the incident, gaining over 15 retweets and 250 likes in one day (shown below, right).

Later in the show, David apologized to Elmo. On February 1st, Twitter user @rachelmillman pointed out how Elmo was "shaking with rage" after David's apology, gaining over 1,100 retweets and 14,000 likes in one day (shown below).
