Lawsy's "Hotel" is a hip-hop song by rap artist Lawsy that leads with the lyrics, "3 a.m. yeah I'm in the hotel. Bitch, I'm missing you with that throat, yeah. I'm in her pussy she like, 'Oh, yeah.'" "Hotel" went viral on TikTok as a notable sound in mid-2022 after it was used in many videos, primarily for the Giordano TikTok Filter trend. Both a sped-up remix and a slowed + reverb remix went viral alongside the unedited version.

Origin

Background

Lawsy is a rapper from Durham, North Carolina who started posting music to YouTube, SoundCloud and Spotify as early as October 2020. He posted his first song "Fuel" to Spotify^[1] on October 23rd, 2020. He also posted it to SoundCloud,^[2] where it received over 180 plays in two years.

On April 12th, 2021, Lawsy posted his first YouTube video, being for the song "Stick!" In one year, it received roughly 9,400 views (shown below, left). On May 22nd, 2022, Lawsy posted the first music video that featured himself, made for the song "Ruin It." In two months, it gained roughly 56,100 views (shown below, right).

Lawsy started posting TikTok videos on December 15th, 2021, with a video^[5] that received roughly 15,600 plays in seven months (shown below, left). On January 19th, 2022, he posted a video^[6] of his song "Partner In Crime" that received roughly 265,800 plays and 21,700 likes in six months (shown below, right). The virality of this aforementioned TikTok gave him more followers and led to the engagement for "Hotel" he'd receive later on in 2022.

TikTok Trend Origin

On May 6th, 2022, Lawsy posted a TikTok^[7] that was a screen-recording of his song "Hotel" surfaced from SoundCloud.^[4] In two months, the TikTok received roughly 4.8 million plays and 283,100 likes (shown below, left). On May 27th, 2022, Lawsy posted "Hotel" on YouTube,^[9] earning roughly 784,700 views and 26,000 likes in two months. He additionally posted the track to Spotify^[3] where it received over 3 million streams and to SoundCloud^[4] where it earned over 761,000 streams in two months.

The first TikToker to use Lawsy's "Hotel" as a sound was TikToker^[8] yntd3v on June 20th, 2022, earning roughly 278,800 plays and 73,000 likes in one month (shown below, right).

Spread

On June 29th, 2022, TikToker^[10] yntd3v posted another video using "Hotel," stating in text overlay, "y'all gone get tired of me nd this sound but ask me if i care??? I DONT." In one month, the video received roughly 474,800 plays and 108,500 likes (shown below, left). This inspired more TikTokers continuing into July 2022. For instance, on July 2nd, 2022, TikToker^[11] simplykamarea pranked her parents with "Hotel," telling them that her boyfriend made it. Over the course of three weeks, the TikTok received roughly 2.2 million plays and 424,400 likes (shown below, right).

One of the first trends to emerge alongside the song was male TikTokers putting themselves in slow motion as they changed outfits, representing the different personalities they "put on" to impress women. On July 5th, 2022, TikToker^[12] luljaimesj was the first to do this, earning roughly 4.5 million plays and 593,300 likes in three weeks (shown below, left). Another trend that emerged with the song was the Giordano TikTok Filter pranks that started on July 13th, 2022, with a video from TikToker^[13] mara.florina, earning roughly 12.2 million plays and 2 million likes in 12 days (shown below, right).

Lawsy's "Hotel" Sped-Up Remix

On July 1st, 2022, Lawsy posted a YouTube^[14] video of his own "Lawsy – Hotel (sped up)" remix, earning roughly 271,900 views in three weeks. However, on July 10th, 2022, TikToker^[15] ezzsounds posted a more viral sped-up remix that would be used by many TikTokers going forward. It earned roughly 1.1 million plays and 114,000 likes in 15 days (shown below, left). TikToker^[16] .ajdied used the remix for a video on July 10th, earning roughly 246,500 plays and 42,100 likes in 15 days (shown below, right).
