Mains Be Like refers to a Twitter snowclone utilizing emoji and ASCII Art to describe the behavior of players in Super Smash Brothers Ultimate who often play with, or "main," a specific character by illustrating what a typical match against that character looks like.
Origin
While the format began seeing use at the beginning of 2019, the earliest known example was posted December 15th, 2018 by Twitter user @EveryDamnDayyy_[1] making a point about Marth mains, gaining over 60 retweets and 170 likes (shown below).
Spread
The format began spreading more in the beginning of 2019. On January 1st, 2019, several popular tweets using the format were posted, including a tweet by @MOTHERverse about Ness and Lucas mains that gained over 400 retweets and 1,500 likes (shown below, left) and a tweet by @palkias about Cloud mains that gained over 300 retweets and 1,200 likes (shown below, right).
Over the following week, the format saw its most popular tweets to date. User @2Vgotnabbed made a joke about Ice Climbers mains, gaining over 3,800 retweets and 15,000 likes (shown below, left). User @J_S_R_U made a post that subtly referenced the Yoshi Committed Tax Fraud meme that gained over 1,400 retweets and 4,400 likes (shown below, right).
