About

Sans in Smash refers to a collection of jokes that theorise that the Undertale character Sans could appear in Super Smash Brothers. The theory was popularly reiterated after a Smash teaser during a Nintendo Direct which revealed the Inklings from Splatoon will appear in the new Smash Bros.

Origin

Rumors about Sans appearing in Super Smash Brothers following an April 1st, 2015 Nintendo Direct which revealed some downloadable characters for Super Smash Brothers Wii U. After the Direct, Nintendo posted a poll which asked internet users to submit characters they'd like to see in Smash.[1] The earliest known thread advocating for Sans in Smash appeared in October of 2017. On October 17th, 2015, a thread on /r/Undertale[2] asked which Undertale characters the subreddit would like to see in Smash.

Spread

Another thread in which Redditors talked about Sans appearing in Smash appeared on /r/Undertale on October 29th, 2015.[3] On January 6th, 2016, Steam user Zoracs[4] posted a thread with a possible move set for Sans. On November 5th, 2015, YouTuber user Exciled created a video titled "Sans for Smash 4" (shown below, left). On April 18th, 2016, YouTuber Master0fHyrule uploaded a mod showing Sans in a Smash-like stage, gaining over 500,000 views (shown below, right).

There are several Smash mods which allow players to play as Sans in the game.[5][6] Additionally, there are several pieces of fan art and Character Announcement Parodies parodying the announcement. A Deviantart character announcement parody by R-One-92 appeared on May 24th, 2016 (shown below, left). Another character announcement parody by Aminoapps user Bill Cipher was posted September 14th, 2017 (shown below, right).

Wait a minute

Delrarune implies that Asriel is a Yoshi main, basically confirming that Super Smash Bros. exists within the Undertale universe

This DLC adds a Sans costume and a Megalovania track, basically treating Undertale like a video game universe just like the rest

Sans himself can play as himself in Smash while listening to Megalovania

As if this fucker wasn’t already aware enough of the fourth wall
