About
Mario Crying In The Rain On Steps refers to an image of Mario sitting in the rain on a set of stairs looking sad. The image was originally posted to BlogSpot in 2008 before it went viral in the following years in image macros and as a reaction image in memes.
Origin
On January 11th, 2008, BlogSpot[1] user Casey Richardson posted a rendered image of Mario crying in the rain while sitting on a staircase as part of his "daily pose" series (shown below, left). In the blog post, he said the image was inspired by an image of an overweight man crying on the steps that went viral on the Something Awful forums (shown below, right).
Here's the next addition to the daily pose series. Since the first theme was happiness, it seemed appropriate to have sadness as the second theme. This image was made about a year ago, so it's kind of a cheat, but it fits the theme perfectly. I created and textured this model based on some ultra-obscure video game character. You've probably never heard of him.
Spread
The image increasingly became the subject of memes over the following years, becoming notably popularized in the early 2020s. On February 8th, 2020, Tumblr[4] user caninesensitivity posted the image in response to a thread where someone writes, "kissa u lova and embracea u hava…….. crush on u," followed by another user writing, "mario i don’t feel the same," gaining over 71,000 notes in two years (shown below).
On February 27th, 2020, Twitter[2] user @jycompany_ posted a version of the image with the intention of finding its origins and what game the sprite comes from, gaining over 2,200 likes in two years but failing to find the origin. On June 19th, Twitter[3] user @KoopaKid660 posted that he'd found the origin, linking to Casey Richardson's blog, gaining over 2,500 likes in two years. On July 17th, Tumblr[5] user dreamon-worshiper posted an image macro using the meme captioned "the machine said bop it but I twisted it," gaining over 32,000 notes in two years (shown below).
On January 8th, 2021, Redditor adam4536 posted a meme to /r/memes[6] using the image as a reaction to a sign reading "please do not finger the peaches," gaining over 41,000 upvotes in a year (shown below, left). On January 13th, Tumblr[7] user animusrox posted an image macro captioned, "Mario when he finds out Trump has been in Peach two times now," referring to the Trump In Peach meme, gaining over 11,000 notes in a year (shown below, right).
