Origin

On February 2nd, 2024, X^[1] user @MetalGearFacts1 posted a photo of a kitten, writing, "Can someone make him metal gear or devil may cry," garnering over 3,500 likes and 230 reposts in five months (shown below).

The post inspired several photoshops of the kitten as Metal Gear and Devil May Cry characters over the following days, including viral examples by X^[2][3] users @Fe_Zap and @teoft_ on February 3rd, garnering over 10,000 and 41,000 likes, respectively, in five months (shown below).

Spread

On July 8th, 2024, X^[4] user @MetalGearFacts1 made a sequel to the original post, sharing a photo of a cat and writing, "Can someone make him Metal Gear," garnering over 133,000 likes and 3,500 reposts in a day (shown below).

Similarly to the February 2024 post, the July post inspired numerous Photoshop examples depicting the cat as Metal Gear characters, including Snake, Raiden and more. For example, that day on July 8th, X^[5][6][7] users @lemandsuch, @skibidijesus14 and @Arukad0u posted photoshops that gained over 4,800 likes, 9,200 likes and 6,800 likes, respectively, in a day (shown below, left to right).
