About

Moe Tossing Barney Out is an image macro featuring a series of frames from an episode of the American animated series The Simpsons. In the meme, the character Moe can be seen physically removing his friend and bar patron Barney from Moe's Tavern. Immediately, after throwing Barney out of frame, Barney can be seen sitting directly behind Moe. The meme generally expresses the feelings associated with a recurring problem.

Origin

On March 12th, 2006, The Simpsons episode "The Seemingly Never-Ending Story" aired in the United States.[1] In the episode, the character Moe tosses Barney from the doorway of Moe's Tavern. Almost simultaneously, Barney reappears behind Moe (clip below).

The earliest known usage of the image as a meme was posted by KnowYourMeme[2] user Mr. Sparkle on June 30th, 2012. That day, they posted a GIF of the scene, receiving more than 4,300 views in seven years (shown below).

That year, the GIF was shared on MemeCenter. [3] Additionally, eBaum's World [4] user mateusos shared the GIF on December 11th, 2012.

On June 20th, 2015, Tumblr [5] user scarymonstersasc shared a variation of the GIF, featuring characters from the anime series JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. The post received more than 1,400 notes in four years (shown below, left).

Two years later, on September 12th, 2017, Memedroid[6] user GeobasioelLuterpollo posted a three-panel object labeling variation of the scene (shown below, center). The post received more than 1,500 points (95% upvoted).

On April 24, 2019, Redditor [7] facuperez8 posted a variation in the /r/ElderScrollsBlades subreddit. The post received more than 440 points (99% upvoted) in two months (shown below, right).

Several months later, on June 24th, Redditor[8] MDaenmke posted a variation of the meme that uses specifics from World War II. The post received more than 57,000 points (97% upvoted) in less than one month (shown below).
