One Eyebrow Raised Emoji 🤨 is an emoji showing a face with one arched eyebrow, conveying disapproval, suspicion, and concern. The emoji gained popularity in early of 2021 along with The Rock's Eyebrow Raise.

Origin

According to Emojipedia^[1], the emoji was added to Unicode 10.0 in 2017 and Emoji 5.0 the same year. It is available on many platforms including Google, Apple, Twitter, Facebook (shown below).

Spread

In its early life, the emoji had an association with Stephen Colbert. The term was coined on January 28th, 2016 after Twitter^[2] user @mark_e_davis uploaded a tweet about new emoji candidates. One of them is One Eyebrow Raised, which he called the Colbert Emoji (shown below).

In late 2021, the emoji was associated with various characters who use the same expression. For example, on November 8th, 2021, Facebook^[3] page Maya Yamato's Shitposting Page uploaded an image of Keke Tang with a similar expression. The post received more than 1,000 reactions and 583 shares (shown below, left). On November 15th, 2021, Reddit^[4] user eternal_classic uploaded an Emoji Demotivationals variation to /r/okbuddybaka subreddit. The post received more than 6,500 points (shown below, right).

The Rock's Eyebrow Raise

The emoji became well-known in early 2021 along with the popularity of The Rock's Eyebrow Raise, a a series of reaction videos of actor and former professional wrestler Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson raises his eyebrow, accompanied by the Vine Thud. On March 25th, 2021, the earliest discovered reuploads of the videos were made on Reddit^[5] and YouTube^[6][7][8][9] (shown below). An upload in which a filter was applied to Johnson's face to give him a similar appearance to Sus Jerma was also made. During that period, the videos were being referred to as "Sus Rock" due to the virality of ironic Among Us memes and his expression conveying suspicion.
