In late April and early May 2026, the scene went viral as a reaction meme, most notably on TikTok and Instagram Reels. As a meme, the scene is used to express a feeling of overwhelming joy, often upon discovering something good.

Origin

In the Penguins of Madagascar film, released in November 2014, the penguins, Skipper, Rico, Private and Kowalski, break into Fort Knox to steal gold in celebration of Private's birthday. They break into a vault filled with gold bars and look around in awe.^[1]

On May 1st, 2026, TikToker^[2] @xuiono posted a meme that attaches the caption, "How it feels going home to a cat after having a bad day," garnering over 1.8 million views in six days. This is one of the earliest known videos to use the meme.

The Penguins of Madagascar meme spread as a reaction GIF in comment sections of TikTok videos, as well as in videos about finding something that inspires a feeling of awe or joy, in early May 2026.

On May 2nd, 2026, TikToker^[3] @xexholza posted a video captioned, "How it genuinely feels to rediscover a lost gem from 5 years ago," using several reaction images, including the Penguins reaction image, to represent the feeling, garnering over 267,000 views in five days.

As the meme spread in early May 2026, TikTokers began leaving it as a comment along with variations of the phrase, "TikTok this week be like," implying that memes on TikTok had been particularly funny that week.

This was called out as annoying in videos by numerous TikTokers,^[4] including @semdenalt on May 4th, 2026, gaining over 55,000 views in three days.

On May 6th, 2026, TikToker^[5] @vexbolts posted a video recreating the meme with other content creators, including PowEnvy, garnering over 800,000 views in a day.
