Rally Potato is a potato mailed to Twitter user Austin Riley's Rakes of the Chatting Average Podcast, which fans of the Atlanta Braves baseball team adopted as a good luck charm during the 2020 Major League Championship Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Origin

On October 14, 2020, podcaster, Twitter user, and Atlanta Braves fan Austin Riley's Rakes tweeted out a picture of an explained potato with writing on it that he received an in the mail.[1] The writing on the potato said, "Congratulations! I mailed you a potato. But would do such a thing??? [sic] By the way, you cannot legally bake this potato. Sorry."[1]

The potato arrived on October 14, 2020 during the third game in the Major League Baseball National League Championship series between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Atlanta Braves, in which the Dodgers scored 15 runs in the first three innings of the game.[2] After receiving the potato, the Dodgers did not score for the remainder of the game.[3] Braves fans adopted the potato as a good luck charm, dubbing it the Rally Potato.

Braves fans began sharing multiple tweets related to potatoes on Twitter using the hashtag #RallyPotato and the 🥔 emoji. On October 15, 2020, sports blog Korked Bats shared an article outlining the origin of the Rally Potato and providing various notable examples.[4] Following the blowout defeat in game three of the series, the Braves went on to win game four of the series on October 15, 2020 by a score of 10-2.[5] At 12:00am in Atlanta on Oct. 16, 2020, the official Atlanta Braves twitter appeared to adopt the Rally Potato, tweeting out the #RallyPotato hashtag and emoji with a picture of a potato in Truist Park (the Atlanta Braves' home field) with the words "Braves Win" written across it:
