Rizz God / Rizz Nicknames

About

Rizz Nicknames refer to a series of puns involving the slang term rizz that make nicknames for people with "unspoken rizz." Some prominent name examples are "Rizzly Bear," "The Rizzard of Oz" and "The Rizzler," among others. Many of them stem from the practice of calling people Rizz God. Rizz nicknames trended on TikTok in late 2022 as users tried to compile a list of all rizz nicknames called the Rizz Dictionary or Rizztionary. The trend was propelled by the Lightskin Stare trend and many memes used clips of Kratos from God of War.

Origin

Rizz God and Rizz Lord

The original rizz nickname was "Rizz God." In June 2021, late July 2021 and early August 2021, "Rizz God" was mentioned a few times in Twitter^[1][2][3] replies. However, the term "Rizz God" surfaced en masse on August 9th, 2021, when Twitch streamer Kai Cenat was on an e-date hosted by Adin Ross in which he won the hand of adult star Teanna Trump (YouTube upload shown below).

After the stream on August 9th, Cenat tweeted,^[4] "W RIZZ WELCOME TO THE A," and earned roughly 15,200 likes in 16 months (shown below, left). Many Twitter^[5][6] users quote retweeted and replied to the tweet calling Cenat a "Rizz God." Two days later, on August 11th, 2021, Cenat tweeted,^[7] "RIZZ GOD," earning roughly 6,700 likes in 16 months (shown below, right). Additionally, the nickname "Rizz Lord" surfaced amid the same video on Twitter.^[8]

A definition for "Rizz God" was first added to Urban Dictionary ^[9] on January 23rd, 2022, by user Jeheheheheueheh, earning 41 likes in 11 months.

Rizzly Bear and Rizzard of Oz

Perhaps the two most notable examples of rizz nicknames that err on the side of puns are "Rizzly Bear" (as in grizzly bear) and the "Rizzard of Oz" (as in The Wizard of Oz). On March 19th, 2022, Twitter^[10] user RollsRoyceRizz tweeted, "Mfs don’t want me to turn into the Rizzly Bear," earning no likes in nine months but being the first known internet user to use the term online (shown below, left). On May 19th, 2022, Twitter^[11] user LChalaire tweeted, "my rizz is actually crazy. dude called me 'rizzard of oz' today at the store," earning no likes but, again, being the first known internet user to use the term online (shown below, right).

Spread

Despite early 2022 usage on Twitter, the phrase "Rizzard of Oz" trended amid the "Rizz Meter" TikTok^[13] filter that surfaced in late September 2022. Users were given one out of many rizz phrases (including negative rizz) based on the filter's random generation. One of the filter's options was "Rizzard of Oz." After the virality of the "Rizz Meter" TikTok^[13] filter in late September 2022, on October 1st, 2022, Twitter^[12]user sxmrss tweeted "'Rizzard of oz'" as a reply to a thread started by Twitter user tize4PF, gaining over 330 likes in two months. Soon after, other tweets^[14] mentioned the pun/nickname.

On October 15th, 2022, TikToker^[15] qquyen.tran posted a video which had a description reading, "They call me the rizzard of oz," gaining roughly 182,200 plays and 30,300 likes in two months (shown below, left). Soon after, other rizz nicknames surfaced on the app. For instance, on November 5th, 2022, TikToker^[16] paradisegrind used the term "The Rizzler" (as in the Batman villain The Riddler) in a video that received roughly 77,000 plays and 3,500 likes in one month (shown below, right).

Going into late 2022, more rizz nicknames surfaced amid the lightskin stare trend. For instance, on November 29th, 2022, TikToker^[17] why_so_serious008 posted a video that labeled a scene from The Super Mario Bros. Movie trailer "The Rizzler," gaining roughly 5.2 million plays and 546,000 likes in three weeks (shown below, left). Also a growing TikTok trehd of IShowSpeed yelling "Shut the f--k up!" used rizz nicknames. TikTokers used the sound to humorously show anger about their friends calling them a rizz nickname when trying to flirt with someone or when they were simply doing any sort of interaction that could be construed as flirting. Many of the videos were uploaded by TikToker^[18] bleepblop69 even though the sound was later removed from the platform (reupload shown below, right).

By late November 2022, users across platforms started to compile every rizz nickname they knew of. For instance, on November 24th, 2022, TikToker^[19] ssjeli posted a video with multiple rizz nicknames overlayed in text, earning roughly 620,700 plays and 75,600 likes in three weeks (shown below, left). On November 27th, 2022, TikToker^[20] liampalmermusician posted a "Part 1" of rizz nicknames, gaining roughly 150,500 plays and 5,100 likes in three weeks (shown below, right).

On December 5th, 2022, Twitter^[21] user WannaBeReece tweeted, "Can y’all reply with some other rizz nicknames please, i need more," gaining roughly 20,900 likes in 16 days. A few days later, on December 12th, 2022, Twitter^[22] user OvOBrezzzy posted a similar tweet, gaining roughly 41,500 likes in nine days.
