SAVE ME N*****MAN* is a phrase commonly found on 4chan referencing famous horror author H. P. Lovecraft and his cat. The phrase is mainly posted with the poster pretending to be H. P. Lovecraft and freaking out at something "scary", while calling for his cat to save him. Often, the phrase is accompanied by things like "Is that a _____?", "I'M GOING INSANE", "I'M GOING CRAZY", and screaming such as "AAAAAAAAAAAAAA". Also quite common is for the cat to "betray" Lovecraft and/or not save him, indicated by phrases like "WHY WOULD YOU BETRAY ME" and "YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO SAVE ME". The posts are usually made in response to a seemingly tentacled/Lovecraftian-looking monster, or else a relatively benign non-scary thing that one is pretending is scary. Sometimes it is used to refer to certain races (e.g. Italians), the joke being that Lovecraft would view someone of that race as a scary monster. Lately, it is used to simply mock someone who is overly serious/losing their mind over some trivial issue.

Origin

H. P. Lovecraft was an influential author in the horror genre famous for creating monsters that were scary because of how beyond human comprehension they were. Such monsters (and the horror associated with them) are often referred to as "Lovecraftian", and are commonly associated with tentacles (such as the Cthulhu). Lovecraft has also more recently become famous for his racism (not just against blacks, but Irish, Italians, etc.), as well as his cat.

On 4chan, while references to Lovecraft and his cat had been made for many years prior, the meme took off starting with a post on December 14th, 2019^[1], where the poster pretends to be Lovecraft freaking out over an octopus and his cat.

Since then, the meme and associated phrases have become a common reaction on 4chan. Similar to Schizoposting , it is now sometimes just used as a nutty response to anything one might care about. E.g. "Is that a…PENCIL? I'M GOING INSANE!! SAVE ME N-"
