About
The Shrek 2 Dinner Scene is a sequence from 2004 Dreamworks movie Shrek 2, in which Shrek and King Harold display their animosity towards each other. The climax of that scene, with each present character yelling at one another, save for Donkey saying his own name, is at the origin of an object-labeling meme, typically displaying a multi-faceted conflict involving one clueless party.
Origin
This scene takes place during a dinner organized by King Harold and Queen Lillian, with Shrek, Princess Fiona and Donkey as the guests. The crescendo of the tension between Shrek and King Harold culminates with the four former yelling each other's names in anger or shock, and Donkey misreading the situation and yelling: "Donkey!". This exchange is a reference to a scene from 1975 movie The Rocky Horror Picture Show, during a reunion (see below, on the right), in which the present characters dramatically say each other's names; Dr Frank-N-Furter saying "Rocky!" is the inspiration for Donkey saying "Donkey!". The earliest upload of the scene (see below, on the left) is a YouTube video dating from February 6th, 2012. Its earliest appearance as the 6-panel picture that was gonna become a meme template[1] was uploaded on 9gag on February 4th, 2012.
Spread
The scene seems to have begun being used as a meme in 2016, with a cleaner template being uploaded on imgflip, and instances of the meme appearing on imgflip[3], Reddit[4] and DeviantArt[5].
