About

Shrek Fighting Knights refers to either of two different scenes in the 2001 animated film Shrek in which the titular ogre is forced to defeat a group of Lord Farquaad's knights. The first is a humorous battle montage and wrestling match set to Joan Jett's "Bad Reputation," which has become the source of numerous internet parodies and memes over the years. The second is a more serious clip later in the film in which Shrek attempts to keep knights from restraining him during Lord Farquaad and Princess Fiona's wedding, which has been used on TikTok and YouTube as a video reaction meme template.

Origin

In Shrek, released on April 22nd, 2001, the titular ogre notably fights knights on two occasions. In the first, he arrives at Lord Farquaad's castle as the villain is organizing a tournament among his knights to see who will rescue Princess Fiona. Lord Farquaad then sics the knights on Shrek, and he easily defeats them in a humorous battle montage (shown below, left). The second occurs during Lord Farquaad and Princess Fiona's wedding when Shrek throws knights off him after Farquaad orders his guards to restrain the ogre (shown below, right).

The more humorous fight was the first to be used in memes. One of the earliest notable examples was posted on November 30th, 2018 by YouTuber Narmak,[1] who reanimated the scene as an anime battle, gaining over 4.1 million views in five years (shown below).

Spread

Over the following years, the humorous fight scene was edited and parodied in numerous ways on YouTube. On February 14th, 2021, Thomas Barnard the Health Bar Guy posted a parody that overlaid video game health bars on for Shrek, Donkey and the Knights, gaining over 159,000 views in two and a half years (shown below, left). On April 1st, that year user xyzn1 then posted an edit that set the scene to music from Doom, gaining over 1.2 million views in a similar time frame (shown below, right).

Shrek Tosses Knights Off Him

The later, brief shot of Shrek throwing knights off him from later in the film also began seeing use in memes at the start of the 2020s, sometimes dubbed Shrek Throwing Knights Off Him. The clip is generally used with captions overlaid to describe a situation in which a person may violently fight a mob of others. One of the earliest known examples was posted by YouTuber NoahWiggle on November 3rd, 2019, gaining 3,300 views in three and a half years (shown below).

Edits of the scene began growing more prominent on TikTok in early 2023. These are usually set to the TikTok sound "original sound – ⚠️Bashir loves Ghada dib⚠️." For example, on March 24th, 2023, user @miss..lupe posted an edit that gained over 715,000 views in two and a half months (shown below, left). On April 12th, TikToker cursed_memes posted an edit that gained over 1.3 million likes in two months (shown below, right).
