History
On March 19th, 2020, developer Thulinma[1][2] announced the launch of ACPatterns, a tool designated for the creation of pixel images usable by Animal Crossing: New Horizons, as well as the conversion of existing images. On March 20th, 2020, Nintendo Senior Video Producer Alex Onley tweeted[3] about the tool, with the tweet receiving over 40 retweets and 700 likes.

The tweet prompted viral spread of the trend in the Animal Crossing fan community in the following days.
Features
Animal Crossing Patterns allows users to create 32×32 pixel images that can later be uploaded to Animal Crossing: New Horizons and other installments of the series. The tool also allows converting existing images, such as memes and emotes, into the format.
After the image is completed, the website generates a QR code for the image that can be used to upload the image into the game. The image can be uploaded to Animal Crossing: New Horizons by using the NookLink mini-app within the Nintendo Switch Online app for iOS and Android. In Animal Crossing: New Leaf this can be accomplished by using the QR machine at the Able Sisters Tailor Shop in the game.[5]
