Smiling Friends Cast as Characters From Other Shows is a redraw meme series in which the characters from Smiling Friends are depicted as characters from other shows and media properties. The trend was popularized on the /r/SmilingFriends subreddit in June 2024, although examples of redraws imagining the cast as other characters dates back to as early as 2022.

Origin

The earliest known redraw of the Smiling Friends cast as characters from another show was posted by Redditor u/pisoaquitano to /r/SmilingFriends^[1] on February 6th, 2022, garnering over 1,400 upvotes in two years (shown below). The redraw imagines the cast as the characters from SpongeBob SquarePants.

Spread

The trend became further popularized over the following years. On October 13th, 2023, u/DannydeVito36 posted a collection of 10 redraws to /r/SmilingFriends^[2] depicting the cast as characters from a variety of shows, including Rick and Morty, The Simpsons, South Park and more, garnering over 2,700 upvotes in eight months (examples shown below).

On April 6th, 2024, X^[3] user @sppimmmy posted a redraw of the characters as characters from Happy Tree Friends, garnering over 200 likes in two months. On May 3rd, u/BigExperience2086 posted a version to /r/SmilingFriends^[4] referencing Adventure Time, garnering over 1,500 upvotes in a month (shown below).

On June 12th, u/eappleforever4 posted a compilation of examples of the trend to /r/SmilingFriends,^[5] writing, "I KEEP ON SEEING THESE EVERYWHERE!!" garnering over 4,000 upvotes in a day and increasing the popularity of the trend. That day, u/Gallad475 posted a version to /r/SmilingFriends^[5] referencing Monsters Inc. that gained over 700 upvotes in a day (shown below, left). On the same day, u/keagan-stanks posted a version to /r/SmilingFriends^[6] referencing Regular Show that gained over 800 upvotes in the same span of time (shown below, right).
