Smug Jug refers to a green ceramic jug with a smug-looking face on one side of it. The Smug Jug was first photographed in a store and posted to Tumblr in 2017, with animated 3D GIFs of the jug appearing online in 2023. Smug Jug went on to inspire memes and fan art on Tumblr and X / Twitter in 2023 and early 2024.

Origin

On August 25th, 2017, Tumblr^[1] user FancyBroom posted an image of a green ceramic jug with a face protruding from it. The image was captioned, "Me: I'm not going to turn into a hand made clay jug tonight ! / Me after 7 tequila shots." The post gathered over 290,000 notes in six years.

The earliest known record of the jug being dubbed "Smug Jug" can be traced to a Fandom^[6] page from June 20th, 2022, which gives a fictitious history of the jug.

Spread

Redditor /u/minecradt_meerkat reposted the image of the jug to /r/shitposting on April 21st, 2023, gathering over 200 upvotes in a year.^[2] On July 9th, Tumblr^[3] user @thetyrannosaur sent an animated GIF version of the jug to Tumblr user @georgebbwbush, gathering over 24,000 notes in eight months (seen below).

On December 9th, 2023, Tumblr^[4] user @moctor posted another Smug Jug GIF, writing, "wake the fuck up new smug just dropped." The post gathered over 12,000 notes in two months (seen below).

On December 14th, Tumblr^[5] user Moctor responded to a query about the genesis of the Smug Jug 3D render, to which fancybrooms responded by saying that they took the original photo, gathering over 11,000 notes in two months.

Neocities user vesselvindicate^[7] posted an account of the Smug Jug's evolution sometime after the aforementioned events, publishing a variety of Smug Jug GIF variants, sourced from Tumblr user Moctor (seen below).
