About

Step 1. Open Settings App refers to a series of Papyrus Irony memes on TikTok widely shared by TikToker owen1514 (_owen1514_) in early 2024. The images show an animal image macro with a top caption written in Papyrus font that reads "Step 1," "Step 2," "Step 3" and so forth. The videos and photo slideshows used the song "We Don't Luv Em" by Hoodrich Pablo Juan ("The money go where I go. Smokin' on gelato"). The meme builds on the Freaky Settings App memes on Instagram.

Origin

On February 17th, 2024, TikToker[1] @_owen1514_ posted a video showing a dog in a The Cat in the Hat outfit with a top caption written in Papyrus, reading, "Step 1. open settings app." The video's TikTok sound was a slowed remix of "We Don’t Luv Em" by Hoodrich Pablo Juan, centering on the lyric, "The money go where I go." Over three days, the video received roughly 2.6 million plays and 511,900 likes (shown below).

Precursor

TikToker[1] @_owen1514_'s video was inspired by Papyrus Irony memes originally spread by Instagram user @ug2sick, also known as Bug2sick, in 2023. Bug2sick largely popularized the use of the Papyrus font as well as the ironic iOS Settings App memes (example from Instagram[2] shown below, left). Instagram[3] user @yocrizp also posted similar Papyrus memes with animal photos (shown below, right) before TikToker[1] @_owen1514_'s video.
