Reception

Following the film's October 2024 release, critics panned it, like Slate[16] critic Dana Stevens on October 4th, writing, "By any reasonable measure this is a terrible movie, too long and too self-serious and way too dramatically inert, a regrettable waste of its lead actors’ boundless commitment to even their most thinly written roles." Similarly, New York Times[17] critic Manohla Dargis wrote, "'Joker: Folie à Deux' is such a dour, unpleasant slog that it is hard to know why it was made or for whom."

On Rotten Tomatoes,[18] the film received a 33% Tomatometer score and a 31% Popcornmeter score by critics and audience members.

Online Presence

In October 2024, internet users reacted to the film with memes and viral posts. For instance, on October 3rd, X[19] user @ninewontmiss tweeted a video of comedian Shane Gillis putting a firearm in his mouth, "Me after watching Joker 2. They just wanted Lady Gaga to sing. Similarly, on October 4th, X[20] user @willfulchaos tweeted a video of a disappointed woman green-screened multiple times in a movie theater setting, captioned, "my theater every time joker and harley started singing in joker 2," receiving over 6,900 likes in three days (shown below).

Alternatively, others attested that they enjoyed the film, such as X[21] user @subtoconnorpls on October 5th, who wrote, "i have something to say about joker 2," captioning a video of actor Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle in The Punisher saying in a courtroom, "I liked it!" The tweet amassed over 29,000 likes in two days (shown below).

Similar posts including discourse and takes surfaced on Reddit during the same timeframe. For instance, on September 30th, Redditor[22] Kazrules posted to /r/boxoffice, writing, "I have never seen a movie lose so much hype than Joker 2." The Redditor alleged that the film would suffer in the box office because of the lack of "hype" surrounding the film following the La Biennale di Venezia film festival. The Redditor's post received over 6,900 upvotes in a week (shown below).

r/boxoffice ⚫7 days ago Kazrules I have never seen a movie lose so much hype than Joker 2 ✓ Original Analysis Joker Folie a Deux comes out in three days. But ever since Venice, the amount of ads that I have seen has dramatically decreased. No one is talking about the movie on social media anymore. The film has been completely snuffed out of every awards conversation. Lady Gaga released a companion album to no fanfare. It is an absolute ghosttown in terms of hype. The first teaser got 36M views. The second got 27M. I know trailer views aren't everything—but these numbers were strong. I don't buy the narrative that no one was interested in a Joker sequel. The interest was there, but the festival reactions just torpedoed this whole movie. The only film I can compare it to would be Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, which had a moderate degree of interest until its middling festival reviews as well. Could this spell the end for blockbuster movies premiering at prestigious film festivals? The crowds don't like them, and they only serve to give a movie negative press weeks before release. With the lack of promotion, I'm getting the sense that Warner Bros is A.) extremely disappointed and probably upset, and B.) just biding their time until DC gets a full factory reset with Superman. But with these many bombs in a row, Superman is in an extremely vulnerable position. This has to be the worst time to be a DC fan.

Joker Raped in "Folie à Deux"

Joker Raped in Folie à Deux refers to a scene that heavily implies the character Arthur Fleck / Joker is sexually assaulted by prison guards in the 2024 film Joker: Folie à Deux. The scene became a subject of controversy online as many users expressed dissatisfaction with it and the film as a whole, and it was a prevalent subject of memes on X / Twitter and 4chan's /tv/ board in early October 2024.

Okay, so the first Joker was fairly small movie with a moderate 55-70 million budget and was rated R so WB obviously didn't have much faith in it and were surprised when it became such a huge hit. They probably begged Philips for a sequel even though the first one was clearly meant as a stand alone film, so Philips decided to fuck with everyone and make this movie; which seems like it was intentionally designed to not just piss off the audience and the fanbase but lose money for WB, while tricking them into thinking the film would be a smash hit just because they cast Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn. Which is a massive dick move because WB/DC might become even worse control freaks over future directors if this movie does flop.

It really is one of those sequels where you just shake your head and go "I could come up with a better story than this."
