About
Monster Girl Encylopedia is an internet-based series and a series of books centered around Monster Girls. The series mainly features books written in an encyclopedic style by an in-universe known as "A certain wandering scholar of monsters", which depicts various aspects of a fantasy world prominently featuring monster girls, most notably in the form of profiles detail each species and subspecies of monster girls.
The series was one of the first big work of fiction centering exclusively on Monster Girls and thus, became one of the most well-known icons regarding the genre and has greatly influenced some of the later work of the same genre, such as Monster Musume and Monster Girl Quest.
History
Kenkou Cross began working on art and profiles depicting monster girls as early as 2007, at the time only released on his website. While early profiles often depicted rather generic portraits of a specific kind of monster girl, future entries eventually shaped up the setting into a unique one with a large amount of worldbuilding, differencing it from other monster girls-centric work.
The number of profiles accumulated itself over the years, culminating in the release of the first Monster Girl Encyclopedia book, compiling all first 100 profiles on top of adding new information on the lore not pertaining to any specific monster girl. From this point on, books would be semi-regularly published, either containing new information, compiling profiles or publishing approved fan work.
In 2016, rights to translate and publish books of the series were brought by Seven Seas Entertainment, marking the first time of a Monster Girl Encyclopedia being officially translated and published in the West. The first book was released in late 2016, while the second was released in 2017.
Reception
The series was generally well-received, being highly rated on most websites, including Amazon [1] or Mangapark [2], rated 4.7/5 and 9.5/10 respectively on these websites.
Online Relevance
Fandom
The book series possesses a decent fanbase, with the design of the monsters being popular on communities where Monster Girls are popular, including 1d4chan or 8chan's monster-centric board, /monster/. Due to the nature of the series as being strictly focused on worldbuilding, it has also spawned a decent number of doujins, with a number of them being officialized into the main series itself.
