Scary Godmother is a series of children's books and comics surrounding the titular character, Scary Godmother. Created by writer and illustrator Jill Thompson in 1997, the books would eventually receive two made-for-TV movie adaptations that would air on Cartoon Network yearly beginning in 2004. The franchise has received a cult following mainly for its perceived nostalgia value, as many grew up watching the annual specials.

History

The first Scary Godmother book, simply titled Scary Godmother, was released in September of 1997 and published by Sirius Entertainment.[1]


About a dozen more comics were issued between then and 2002. In 2003, the first made-for-TV special premiered, titled Scary Godmother Halloween Spooktacular saw its premiere near the end of October. Produced by Mainframe Entertainment, the company behind the world's first completely CGI animated series ReBoot, the special first aired in Europe, Latin America, Australia, and Canada, with Cartoon Network airing it in the US in 2004 and since then, yearly during the month of October (trailer shown below). This was followed up by a sequel, Scary Godmother: The Revenge of Jimmy in 2005.

Reception

The series has received some accolades, such as winning a "Lulu of the Year" Lulu Award in 2001 and an Eisner award for "Best Title for a Younger Audience and Best Painter/Multimedia Artist (Interior)". Both animated TV specials received generally positive reviews, with IMDb giving Halloween Spooktacular a 7.0/10.[2]

Online Relevance

The film and series has a troll Wiki account,[3] which portrays fake characters in the series. The troll wiki was inquired about on /r/OutOfTheLoop[4] on October 9th, 2017. On October 4th, 2017, The Nostalgia Critic uploaded a look back at the original film, gaining over 754,000 views.
