Slippin' Jimmy is a limited series of six animated comedy shorts released on AMC+ in May 2022. The series is a prequel to Better Call Saul and follows a young James McGill, at the time nicknamed Slippin' Jimmy, navigating Catholic school in the 70s. Each episode is an ode to a specific movie genre. The series received largely negative reviews upon release and inspired numerous memes and reactions.

History

On March 19th, 2021, the Better Call Saul Twitter[1] account announced two spinoff series for the show: Slippin' Jimmy and Employee Training, gaining over 2,600 likes in a year. On February 10th, 2022, Variety[2] published an article offering a description of the series, describing it as, "a six-part animated series from the world of 'Better Call Saul'" that "follows the misadventures of a young Jimmy McGill and his childhood friends in Chicago." The claim each episode of the show is an ode to a movie genre 'from spaghetti westerns and Buster Keaton to 'The Exorcist.'" A trailer for the series was posted to the Rotten Tomatoes TV YouTube[3] channel that day, gaining over 279,000 views in four months (shown below).

Release

The full series was released on the AMC+ streaming service on May 23rd, 2022.[4] On June 2nd, AMC posted the full third episode of the show to YouTube,[5] gaining over 79,000 views in two weeks (shown below).

Slippin' Jimmy received largely negative reviews upon release, with a 33% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes[6] and a 2.6/10 rating on IMDB of over 400 reviews.

On the day the show released, Redditor FakePhillyCheezStake made a post to /r/BetterCallSaul[7] titled, "Unpopular Opinion: Better Call Saul Presents: Slippin’ Jimmy is better than both Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul," writing, "Yes, BB and BCS are dramatic masterpieces, but Jimmy has a sentient sled in this show. That seals it in my book," gaining over 250 upvotes in three weeks. On May 24th, Blubble Blabber[8] gave the show a positive review of 8/10, writing:

Don’t expect any unearthings of new details about Saul Goodman’s sordid history, Slippin’ Jimmy is just a straight good time that would do just as well standing on it’s own as it’s own ongoing series. Much in the same way Young Sheldon sheds new light on Sheldon’s character in Big Bang Theory, this animated franchise does much of the same, though isn’t expected to be taken quite as seriously.

On June 7th, YouTuber[9] Zeepsterd posted a negative review of the show, gaining ver 382,000 views in a week (shown below).
