I have had to witness a kangaroo being put down with a rock after colliding with our car very much like what Rachel and Sarah had to do. Episode 3: >Prawn-Drawn Carriage is a reference to a BlG Christmas food over here: PRAWNS! I eat them almost every Christmas, great summer food. Yes we call them Prawns not bloody Shrimp. >Crocodiles are native to Australia. She does sketches with YouTube comedy troupe Aunty Donna who I've met, they do great comedy. She also writes/stars on Shaun Micallef's Mad as Hell which is basically our Daily Show, a weekly satirical news program. >Terry Cup could be a nod to the Melbourne Cup, one of the biggest horse races in the world. Rachel and Sarah are wearing hats, its a Melbourne Cup tradition for ladies to wear pretty and extravigant hats. >Pokies are what we call slot machines (gambling machines). They're basically lowkey festivals/DJ sets in the middle of the bush which involve a lot of drug-taking and dancing. >Quadruple J is a reference to Triple J which is a popular publically funded youth radio station in Australia. Known internationally for their annual Hottest 100 song lists. They also are ad-free. >The two radio presenters look and sound a lot like Veronica and Lewis, 2 popular Triple J presenters. Although the girl very closely resembles Sally Coleman, the current breakfast host. They reference the "text lines" which is cool since Michael Cusack animated a video for Triple J of a bunch of texts they got from listeners: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y14clTsFli8 [Embed] >The voice of the Red Wizard is done by Jarrad Wright who created the Big L-- show, a massive webcartoon over here. The biggest episodes have 3 million views. Its one of the most iconic series down here, people quote it all the time. Episode 6: >Sarah's dad refers to "Planet Bali". This of course referencing the Indonesian island of Bali. This is a VERY popular holiday destination for Aussie tourists due to cheap airfares. It is known for its parties and cheap beer. If Sarah HAD landed on Planet Bali I imagine there would've been much binge drinking and drug-taking. Episode 7: >We call trucks, Utes, like Utility Vehicles. Ute Uncle Barry Cameo. Episode 8: >i don't know w-- a Chickengong is. >A sausage sizzle is what we call a barbegue when someone cooks sausages and puts them in bread. They're very common for fundraisers. Not too much region-specific humour in the first episode but I would like to point out that the interaction with Sarah's Dad and the cut-out newspaper article has happened to be more than once. YOLO is an American-Australian adult cartoon television series created by Michael Cusack for Adult Swim. The show is also known as YOLO: Crystal Fantasy (season 1) and YOLO: Silver Destiny premiered in August 2020 and follows the adventures of friends Rachel and Sarah as they travel through Australia. Clips from the series have been shared on social media, which also sparked fan art, parodies and lip-dub trends.
History
On August 10th, 2020, YOLO: Crystal Fantasy premiered on Adult Swim[1] in the United States. On July 27th, 2020, YouTube[2] user @Swimpedia uploaded a promotional video (shown below) about the series, which amassed over 15,000 views and 198 likes in four years.
Premise
YOLO TV series follows a pair of Australian party girls Sarah and Rachel who are looking for fun times, new experiences, positive vibes, and hopeful horoscopes in the bizarre town of Wollongong[3].
Online Presence
Online, clips of the show have gone viral on TikTok since August 2020. For example, on August 18th, 2020, Adult Swim's TikTok[4] account posted a scene from the series (shown below, left). which amassed more than 143,000 plays and 16,000 likes in four years. On March 3rd, 2024, TikTok[5] user @gh0stlyscare uploaded another scene from the show, which amassed over 4 million plays and 1 million likes in a month.
