About

Super Mario in Real Life refers to a comedy sketch in which a child says "Super Mario in real life" and then provides a portrayal of Mario from Super Mario by shouting "spaghetti!" and stuffing spaghetti into the mouth. Originally posted on Vine in 2015, the video regained popularity online in the late 2010s as a source material for humorous edits.

Origin

Prior to March 18th, 2015, Leah Hillman uploaded a Vine[1] in which she portrays video game character Mario "in real life." After announcing the name of the sketch, she proceeds to shout "spaghetti!" and stuff a forkful of spaghetti into her mouth. While the original Vine has since been deleted, on March 18th, 2015, Twitter[2] user @Hazz tweeted the sketch. On May 27th, 2017, YouTube[3] user Bluex reuploaded the video, with the reupload gaining over 520,200 views in three years (shown below).

Spread

On May 3rd, 2015, YouTube[4] user Marv Tyrone made the first known parody of the original Vine, with the video receiving over 1,200 views prior to being unlisted.

In the following years, the video has been widely circulated and referenced online. For example, on November 30th, 2017, Twitter user @CybroneX[5] tweeted "I'm just imagining the "super mario in real life" kid, making another video and screaming "sonic the hedgehog in real life."" On May 28th, the Vine was reviewed by Vinesauce Joel during a livestream[6] (shown below).

Prior to July 2019, several edits of the video, including Ear Rape and Void versions, were uploaded online.[7][8] The video did not see a significant presence in memes until in July 2019 an unknown user posted an edit which combined the meme with the "realistic" 3D render of Mario's head also used in This Will Be Graphics in 2013 memes. On July 30th, 2019, Instagram[9] user salsa_69memes.v3 made the earliest known reupload of the video (shown below).

Starting in August 2019, the video gained notable popularity as the source material for humorous edits on Instagram and other platforms. For example, an August 9th, 2019, I'm Ugly. Wait, What? meme by Instagram[10] user professionalretard.mp4 received over 255,300 views and 48,800 likes on the platform in seven months (shown below, left). An August 17th, 2019 upload[11] by the same user received over 216,000 views and 49,900 likes in the same period (shown below, right).
