Tanjiro Disgusted Face is an exploitable image macro taken from a scene in the anime Kimetsu No Yaiba, also known as Demon Slayer. The image depicts the main protagonist, Tanjiro, looking down in disgust at something that is offscreen. In memes, the scene is used in various ways such as photoshopping different elements into the original that he's reacting to or adding a top frame with the reaction image below.

Origin

The scene that the image originally comes from is episode 11 of the first season of Demon Slayer, which aired in Japan on June 15th, 2019, and in America on January 12th, 2020. In the scene, Tanjiro comes face to face with another demon slayer corps member, Zenitsu, whose crying and whining attitude makes Tanjiro pity him to the point of looking down in disgust. The scene was uploaded to YouTube on June 27th, 2020, by the YouTube channel Sauce?,^[1] obtaining 370,000 views in two years (shown below).

The first meme to use the Tanjiro Disgusted face reaction image was uploaded to the /r/animemes subreddit on September 7th, 2019, where it was used in a joke about periods by Redditor tyzy_1187,^[2] earning 21,500 upvotes in two years (shown below).

Spread

The format then began to spread around to other meme and social media sites in late 2019 as the English premiere of the series and the episode neared. Though the original was deleted, an image of Tanjiro looking disgusted while having a photoshopped Samsung phone in his hand started to spread around as a reaction on Twitter on August 19th, 2019, with an example being posted by Twitter account @Shisuinuggetino^[3] (shown below).

On February 2nd, 2020, the meme was altered to make Tanjiro resemble Earth-Chan as part of a meme posted to the /r/Animemes subreddit by user MalcomLuvsPewds^[4] that earned 29,000 upvotes in two years (shown below).
